About this item

In August 1943 a Swedish couple stands trial, accused of having conducted secret radio transmissions to a foreign power while a world war raged.

The evidence is extensive: seized equipment, coded messages and a technically advanced transmitter hidden inside their own furniture.

But the trial is about more than a device.

It is about belief, loyalty and the line between political conviction and crimes against the state. It is about two people who not only deny parts of the indictment, but also contradict each other — while trying to protect what is not said outright.

The sentence is severe — several years of penal servitude.

Yet the story does not end there.

After their release they return to a seemingly ordinary life. They start a family, they work, they become politically active. But in the shadows the contacts, the travels and the surveillance continue. During the 1950s the ties to the East deepen — until one day one of them vanishes without a trace...

Drawing on court records, police reports and previously untapped archive material, this book assembles a coherent picture of a Swedish espionage case that reaches far beyond the courtroom.

It is a story of a life lived in the shadow of surveillance, of love, loyalty and lies in the middle of a war — and of what happens when belief endures, even after the verdict.

Johan Öhgren is an intelligence historian and author focusing on Swedish espionage history. Since 2015 he has run a project to establish a museum of intelligence history in Sweden, and he gives lectures, leads city walks and hosts an international podcast on the subject.
